Château Moulin du Cadet 2003 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé (As rated by Wine Spectator)

3 minute short "Pierre Blois - Aristocracy in the World of Fine Wine" "Pierre Blois - Aristocracy in the World of Fine Wine"

...

This charming vineyard, run by Isabelle and Pierre Blois-Moueix, is located on a
limestone plateau  at the entrance of Saint Emilion, with its notoriety, the wines of Moulin du Cadet have been appreciated for more than a century. In fact, in 1867, during the World’s Fair in Paris, it was one of the estates that got awarded a gold medal. Since 2002, in order to preserve the vineyard and to better the staff’s working conditions, as well as allowing the soil to express its best qualities, the vineyard has been run organically (Agrocert certificate). In 1996 some of the plots were even run bio-dynamically, and as of 2005 it has become the standard practice for the entire vineyard
(Biodyvin Ecocert certificate). Alain Moueix, Isabelle’s brother, with his rigor and his international experience, brings the best expression of Moulin du Cadet from this wonderful soil: the delicate silkiness from the limestone and the subtle force from the clay.

The Winemaking method

Constructed in 1991 in the old traditional method of building, the elegant cellar overlooks the vineyard. The harvest date is carefully chosen to obtain the best maturity for the skin and to keep the mineral freshness of the fruit. After a meticulous sorting of the grapes, berry by berry, the alcoholic fermentation is conducted during 2 to 4 weeks through a temperature control process in concrete tanks. After, the wine is aged in French oak barrels during 12 to 18 months.

Tasting Notes:
Dark and intense garnet colored robe.  The nose is powerfully expressive with ripe fruit and elegant toasty oak.  The structure is rich and full with lovely fleshy tannins that provide a long finish. The 2003 vintage reveals itself more and more as one of the best Bordeaux has had for a long time. It may not keep for as long as some more typical vintages but with its superb taste, it will not last long anyway!
