The Alsace vineyards are characterized by a great diversity in soil types. Some fifty million years ago, the Vosges
and the Black Forest formed a single mass, created by a sequence of geological activities – floods, erosion, and folding of the earth’s crust –  during the Tectonic era. This is the area where the vineyards are now located. In most of the wine-growing communes there are at least four or five different geological structures to the terrain.
